On Brighde Chaimbeul’s overwhelming debut
Ah, how blissful is the feeling when you realize that after two minutes of playing a new record you know you’ve got pure gold in your hands: the discovery of a new place with magnificent roads to get lost in, only to examine every bystreet and alley of it and to keep the place close to your heart. Nothing less than a coup de foudre - this was exactly the case when I first listened to 20-year-old Brighde Chaimbeul’s The Reeling: a mystical record, filled with smallpipe drones, ancient Gaelic dances and subtle touches of concertina and canntaireachd singing, produced by Aidan O’Rourke. If you like dwelling around in the alley where Kali Malone and Laura Cannell reside, look no further. The Reeling might be one of your albums of the year. I called her to discuss the album’s origins, compositions and recording process.

Beyt Al Tapes: I’m afraid the tape deck ate the tape again, or was it my brain?
The idea of doing an interview during an epic flandrien ride was irresistible to me, as I had to interview Belgium’s finest avant-garde cyclist while being a road cycling fanatic and a below-average hobby cyclist myself. Latomme and I took off for a rainy and muddy 140 km ride towards La Houppe, the Taaienberg and the Wall of Grammont. Or wait: were we just sitting on the terrace of Bar à Nelson in Forest? Or did we do both? Anyway, we discussed his latest releases, the meaning of performing live and his moniker, as a preview to his concert at Q-O2.

Aponogeton
There’s a new kid on the electronic drone/minimalism/ambient block: please welcome Bruges-based Jachym Vandenabeele, a.k.a Aponogeton. He released his debut LP 'A Place of Solace' on the prolific Stroom label in March, and it easily stands out in the recent stream of electronic releases. Playing a live show on May 4th at De Koer together with Ahmedou Ahmed Lowla and Aymeric De Tapol, we skyped and discussed the album’s origins, themes, and Tarkovsky’s Stalker as an inspiration. Lewsberg
It’s about time you get to meet Lewsberg, a Rotterdam band named after a Rotterdam writer and singing with a Rotterdam accent. Their record ‘Lewsberg’ was one of last year’s stand-outs in art/indie rock: hypnotic, rattling guitar riffs, intriguing lyrics sung in proper parlando style, sometimes combined with rad sound experiments. We reached out to Michiel Klein and Arie Van Vliet for an old school e-mail interview.
