Over-elaboration of memorized information: meeting Giorgio Dursi's Intestinocephalo
Next week, on October 10, KRAAK will put out a new release. In most cases, this is a rather slow process: we invite somebody to play a concert, we keep in touch, start to ask for more recordings and, eventually, a record comes out of these ongoing conversations and meet ups. This might also explain why KRAAK is such a ‘slow’ label with a somewhat ‘low’ output. Still, we do maintain a highly personal relationship with the artists featured in our catalogue, which also explains why some of them continue releasing their work here. In the case of the cassette by Italian but Berlin-based self-taught composer Giorgio Dursi, it was the other way around. Like many other labels, we get quite a lot of unsolicited demos in our mailbox and hardly have time to go through them all (same old story, I know). But it turns out that the Soundcloud link to this guy’s music got stuck in my browser, and I found myself returning to it a few times a day while hassling with the lump of rather boring things to do here at our HQ. As one thing led to another, we’ve now reached the point where we can celebrate a new release! Since I didn’t know the man behind this music in person, I thought a short write-up at the AG was the best way to remedy this. I sent him a few thoughts and related questions I’ve been elaborating on personally lately.

Red Brut
Marijn Verbiesen is one of the forces that keeps the Rotterdam underground together, participating in numerous projects (Sweat Tongue, JSCA) and as organizer of the infamous Herman concert series. But foremost, she is a highly talented musician that makes her debut on KRAAK with a stunning vinyl, containing tape collages that are highly personal. The future of musique concrète is amongst us; it is called Red Brut.

Sandra Boss
Electronic composer and sound artist Sandra Boss reveals the sonic details of obsolete instruments and material through abstract compositions, sound installations and performances. Her work is structuralist in its core, researching the key elements of music — pure sounds, noise and crackle. She proposes an alternative for the post-romantic narrative, applying a dehumanized view on music as a pure, autonomous organism that appears in different, ever changing forms — either as exciting boredom, abstract sculptural phenomena or an emotionally and physically engaging body.

Jeroen Wille
On November 4th, KRAAK claimed to unite the international scene of independent labels (independent as in free and unbridled) in an event halfway between festival, label-market and gesamtkunstwerk. It turned out to be a day and night in which the boundaries between performance, seller and publication were seriously blurred.

Antti Tolvi
Antti Tolvi is one of the key figures in the Finnish improv scene emerged in the beginning of the 00ties, spoiling the world with loads of stunning, highly inspiring tapes and cd-r’s. Tolvi grew up in Panelia, as small village at the coast of Finland. He studied Indian Classical music and played in cult bands like Lau Nau, Lauhkeat Lampaat and Kemialliset Ystätät.
Last year he stunned the world with a three side vinyl, called ‘Pianoketi’ (Fonal), on which he displayed three beautiful minimalist improvisations an a detuned piano. The pieces weave fragile textures of slightly outworldish tapestry, referring to Terry Riley and Lubomyr Melnyk.

STINE JANVIN MOTLAND
In Bergen, a city where it reportedly
always rains, pushed the young artist
Stine Janvin Motland the limits of the
human voice. As true vocal poet she produces
an intens array of sounds, from
which it’s hard to believe a human voice is
capable of producing it. She released two
records in 2014, Oh Wow and In Labour,
which are in heavy rotation at the KRAAK
office since then.
