Joeri Bruyninckx pulled out some interesting thoughts on his music, situated at the common ground of Baltimore's underground and unearthed African folk melodies.

Lewsberg
It’s about time you get to meet Lewsberg, a Rotterdam band named after a Rotterdam writer and singing with a Rotterdam accent. Their record ‘Lewsberg’ was one of last year’s stand-outs in art/indie rock: hypnotic, rattling guitar riffs, intriguing lyrics sung in proper parlando style, sometimes combined with rad sound experiments. JUNG AN TAGEN
After two hermetic tapes, Jung An Tagen breaks out with Das Fest Der Reichen, his vinyl debut on Editions Mego, which makes him continue a long tradition of experimental electronic music coming from Vienna. Jung an Tagen was added to the triple electronic music bill at Les Ateliers Claus in October, and his show was an exercise in abstract braindance, or in physical synthesized dance madness.

HETGEEN WAAR JE AAN TWIJFELT OF JE ER WEL AANGETROKKEN TOE MAG ZIJN.
Gabber Sam Gunst startte vorig jaar met zijn techno -en acid-tapelabel EURO2000 en gaat sindsdien stevig door aan een tempo van 1 nieuwe release per maand. Daarnaast gooit hij ook als grafisch vormgever hoge toppen, getuige de cover van de Cult.-bijlage van (jawel!) De Morgen. Daarnaast is het hij de drijvende kracht achter het tweejaarlijkse event De Biënnale van België. Hij nodigde KRAAK uit om één van de avonden van zijn tentoonstelling te cureren, waarop we Afework Nigussie, Carrageenan en McCloud Zicmuse aan het Gentse publiek bekend maakten. Tijd voor een interview met de man, als één van de drijvende krachten in de Gentse Underground.

Frank Hurricane
Gangsta Folk. Frank Hurricane invented that genre himself for his music. I guess he did not have to do that because the mix of hiphop and folk had been made before, good and bad. I’m thinking of Beck his slacker hymne ‘Loser’ and ‘What It’s Like’ by Everlast. Don’t ask me why. But the oldest hiphopfolk song must be Dylan’s ‘Subterranian Homestick Blues’, although he would probably tell you he took it from some old bluesman. Anyway. Back to the Hurricane. Frank made two albums I really liked: the storytelling roadtrip blues album ‘‘Quitorian Blues’ and his 70s psychfolk tribute ‘Mountain Brew Light’, both out on the always execellent Feeding Tube label. A talk. Gangsta style. Well, more or less. Ok: less.

Steven Warwick
Nadir is the opposite of Zenith. The latter refers to a high point, the first to the lowest point. It’s also the intriguing title of Steven Warwick aka Heatsick’s new release. The album is conceived as a conceptual mixtape. It deals with contemporary issues as dislocation, emotional fragmentation and intermediation — or the tension between the so-called ‘real’ or material and the virtual world. Every song is a collage of seemingly banal fragments out of (his?) daily live. The lyrics could be random snippets derived from newfeeds, or Peréc-like observations devoid of meaning. Somewhere he sings: “The mezzanine is your dancefloor. It is your Chessboard” and “It feels like an airport, the difference is… at any plane you can choose to leave.”
The mood of Nadir is melancholic, the sound artificial and synthetic. It’s an open record that mixes the literality of pop art with modernist dandyism. It provides a complex of clues, leaving you confused in a most compelling way.

But than again: Blood Stereo is a bit of a strange kind of music too. The play... yeah, what do they play? I guess they just play. Like in: having fun. And taking that serious.

Remörk
A LIVE RECORDING OF A PRETTY WEIRD DJ SET.
One of Belgium’s best kept secrets, and the brain behind a lot of technology that makes some Antwerpian artists sounds like no-one else is Kris Delacour. A multi-instrumentalist and a free mind who is equally a highly talented craftman in music, as he is randomly free-wheeling conceptionalist under his Remörk moniker. He just released his debut vinyl on Ultra Eczema, a residu of a complex process to integrate all forms and media music could have been.
Remörk’s head scratching debut album ‘Principium 2.1’ could have easily crashed under its own weight, too full of ever changing versions of the same idea. But it didn’t.
