Żywizna: music built on the ruins of the 20th century
Guitarist Raphael Rogiński and singer Genowefa Lenarcik recorded music in a forest near the Lithuanian border in order to evoke the wilderness and mystery of the wild forest. They dubbed their collaboration Żywizna.
Warsaw based Raphael Rogiński talks about this project and his approach towards music in general.

HET INTERSTEDELIJK HARMONIUMVERBOND
Het Interstedelijk Harmoniumverbond (Intercity Harmonium League) is the vehicle that transports Glen Steenkiste, Brecht Ameel, David Edren and Steve Marreyt towards new horizons. Sprouted from Glen Steenkiste's desire to translate his solo harmonium offerings as Hellvete into a more acoustic and ensemble-like form, Het Interstedelijk Harmoniumverbond is a collaborative effort to create deeply interwoven quadraphonic harmonium sounds. Glen Steenkiste talks about this new league.

Ka Baird
Ka Baird is one of the founding members of the long-running avant-psych project Spires That in the Sunset Rise, a band the late Jack Rose described as “female Sun City Girls”. Currently Spires consists of the duo Ka Baird and Taralie Peterson.
A few years ago Ka relocated to NYC and set off in numerous directions other than Spires. Her current solo work, which she will present at the KRAAK festival, ventures in piano improvisation, extended vocal techniques, physical movement and electronic manipulation of the flute.

Richard Dawson

Aşıq Nargile
PRESERVING HER IDENTITY AND TAKING IT ABROAD.
The compilation Mountains Of Tongues: Musical Dialects Of The Caucasus brings together songs and instrumentals that were recorded by the Sayat Nova project across 2012 and 2013 during trips across Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. All tracks are drawn from many different musical traditions and several were never recorded before. Stefan Williamson-Fa, one of the founding fathers of the project, provided translation for the following conversation with Asiq Nargile. An Ashiq is a singer who traditionally, accompanied his song with a long necked lute (saz) in Azerbaijani culture and related Turkic cultures.

Accident du Travail
Paring up odd duo’s seems to be a great way of exploring music new and ever-expanding paths. Julie Normal and Olivier Demeaux form Accident du Travail. Well-hidden in the French underground, they team up the powers of the harmonium and the ondes martenot to create almost religious tapestries of sound. Sparse field recordings dwell in between tick layers acoustic drones, while the oldest electronic instrument in musical history leads you down their spiraling path. Mike Cooper
EASTERN DAZE CONNECTS TRADITIONAL FOLK MUSIC AND CONTEMPORARY UNDERGROUND. A REFLECTION BY MIKE COOPER. At 70 years old, Mike Cooper is a highly inventive bottleneck slideguitarist, a veteran of the music world and a fearless world traveller. During the sixties he was one of the upcoming stars of the British Blues and Folk boom, next to six string heroes like John Martyn, Michael Chapman and Roy Harper. He moved towards more unexplored territory on records like ‘Trout Steel’ where he combined country infused rock with jazz, free improv and field recordings. The last 50 years saw him creating an oeuvre that is now being rediscovered by new generations, thanks to a batch of reissues on labels like Paradise of Bachelors and - most of all - continuous exhilarating live performances. On his 2014 LP ‘Cantos de Lisboa’ Cooper collaborated with longtime fan and current guitar hero Steve Gunn. Mike Cooper’s music is impossible to pin down; there’s loop based exotica, deconstructed Hawaïian music, outsider ambient combined with straight up top notch fingerpicking and slide guitar playing. It’s deep, wholly original and impossible to forget once heard.

JIMI HENDRIX JAMMING ON DARK SIDE OF THE MOON: LONG DISTANCE ECHOES FROM KRAUS
Kraus is a New Zealand experimental musician and composer. The New Zealand Listener called him ‘a national treasure’ and ‘one of the most quietly important and interesting people making music in New Zealand’.
